PCR tubes are usually made of polypropylene because it is inert and able to withstand rapid changes in temperature during thermal cycling. The inert nature of polypropylene minimizes the absorption of reactive species, ensuring optimal PCR results. To further ensure batch-to-batch consistency in terms of purity and biocompatibility, new, non-recycled, medical-grade, or molecular biology-grade high-quality polypropylene raw materials should be used in the manufacturing process.

To ensure quality, manufacturers may require visual or physical inspection of PCR/qPCR plastic consumables for integrity to ensure the protection of reaction components. Physical tests can be performed to evaluate sample well evaporation, sealing, and electrical continuity to check for leaks. For biological testing, plastic consumables perform qPCR amplification of certain DNA target molecules to assess nuclease and human DNA contamination.
